3.   Dathias' Story

**********************************************************

The Young Squire.

Dathias Aeter was born just before the war between the Sindorei and the Scourge. Born to the life of a minor noble, he felt it was his duty to enlist in the knights. After some years of study and hardship, enduring trial and tribulation, Dathias Aeter had succeeded in not only becoming a knight but a Paladin. During his training, the Blood knights as they had become known as provided a mission for him.

This mission surprised our young squire as he was not known to be neither the most outstanding nor the worst wretch of the group. This narrative of our squire’s life begins in Silvermoon City as he is listening to the commands of Prince Kael’thelas; before his journey to Dalaran to continue his studies.

“This is the squire?”, asked Kael’thelas.

“Yes my liege.”, replied the seneschal.

As Kael’thelas looked over at Dathias, he noted the squire’s ears  lacked a bit of the point that is inherent in all Sindorei.  Dathias remained still and quiet waiting patiently for his liege to command him.

“Yes, I believe you will do well. I have need of a spy of sorts to spy on the Alliance.”, Kael’thelas finally spoke. “You are to disguise yourself as a human. Infiltrate Lord Uther Lightbringer’s band and determine how and what it is they do with the light. This information is needed if we are to make use of that creature we’ve found. Do you have any questions?”

“None milord.”, replied Dathias somberly. He knew what was asked of him could easily disgrace him, much less seeing him aged to an honorable age.

“I can’t believe Prince Kael’thelas would command such a thing from me?!”, yelled Dathias at his friend Kaanas. “As it is I cannot oversee Aeternum at this time. I hereby place you in command and answerable as High-Lord. Do not fail me my old friend.”

“I shall do as you ask your highness. Just be careful. I have the feeling there is more amiss than this ‘spying’ mission.”, Kaanas softly spoke.

“I believe there is more amiss as well. In any event I am off to go to Elwynn.”

After Dathias packed all his belongings, he traveled south to the city of Stratholme.  His ears were bound in the helmet he wore.  He noted that there was a eerie silence in the fields outside the city. Feeling uneasy, he unpacked his sword and held it at the ready.  Suddenly, a loud shrill scream of anguish, pain, and terrifying horror pierced the air! Dathias left his horse and his belongings on the road as he raced over towards the source of the scream.

Ambush! An arrow flew by, close enough to whistle in his ear. Dathias reacted by ducking away. Looking over, he saw the most horrifying thing he ever had the misfortune of seeing. Upon the ground lay the bodies of villagers, above them a Skeleton Knight stood. Wielding a double-bladed Axe in both hands, he nodded to his comrade, and charged our Paladin. More arrows flew from the bush. A few finding their homes embedded in our paladins’ shield. The Undead creature swung his axe recklessly through the air at our Paladin, fearing no death but his own to deliver.

“By the light, granted in me, purge this place of evil and undeath. EXORCISM!” murmured our Paladin. As bolts of fiery light shot out in all direction, two slammed into both the Knight and his archer. They exploded into a fine mist of putrid flesh and bone.

“Damn the undead.”, muttered Dathias as he checked over the villagers for signs of life. Finding none, he began burying them. As he was performing this task, more men arrived on Horseback. Seeing the royal banner.,Dathias paused and went to one knee.

“HALT in the name of Prince Arthas, Heir to the throne of Lordaeron.”, yelled Uther.

“What in blazes happened here?”, whispered Arthas.

“It was the undead milord. I was riding my horse on the road when I heard a scream. I encountered an archer and an axe wielding warrior. Where they came from or which necromancer summoned them I was not able to determine. I …. Exorcised them, sir.”, Dathias spoke in a soft but firm voice.

“Are you some paladin then son?”, asked Uther.

“Not ordained milord. I felt a divine power and it forced me to speak the words of a spell. This was the result. The villagers were already dead when I got here.”, replied Dathias.

“I see.  Well, Prince Arthas, I think we may finally have a rival for you to work out against in your training. I am getting too old to handle you alone anymore. Ok, son, pick up that blade off the ground and get yourself in a guard position.”  Uther spoke, after the last comment, started chuckling softly.

“We don’t have time for this Uther.”, Arthas muttered impatiently.

“I believe your date with that girl Jaina can wait.”, replied Uther.

As both the Prince and Dathias exchanged blows, it was obvious Dathias was a natural with the blade, but somewhat inexperienced in the northern style. After a quick feint, Arthas disarmed Dathias and sent his sword flying to land hilt up in the dirt.

“You’re good. If you wish to join the Silver Hand, you best make haste to Theramore. I am sure the trainers there will appreciate a good blade to start training.” Arthas motioned for Dathias to go pick up his weapon.

“As Uther so unkindly mentioned. I am late for a meeting.” Joked Arthas.

Little did Dathias know, that would be the last time he would see the Prince on friendly terms or alive in the traditional sense of the word.  As the year flew by, Dathias studied hard and learned the lore of the paladin. Learning how to resurrect, heal and assist others and to be honorable, he felt uneasy by his original mission. Fear that his illusion would not hide his ears forever was the least of his worries. He heard of the destruction of Silvermoon. The loss of the scout leader who had trained him wounded him deeply. He felt a burning hatred at Arthas for what he had done to Sylvannas Windrider. By stealing her soul and making a Banshee out of it was the worst of the crimes he had ever heard. He felt a burning desire to face Arthas and left at once.

Taking a boat to Menethil Harbor from Theramore, Dathias begins his journey back to his home. Stepping into the tavern, he noticed several humans with rather disagreeable expressions on their faces.

“Ooh, boys lookiee here. A Paladin, like that bastard Uther.”, cackled the first.

“That’s a Paladin? I didn’t know they were taking infants in for training.”, jeered the second.

“Well, let's see if his mommy packed some lunch money.”, whispered the third as he made a flying tackle at Dathias. The young paladin fought bravely, but being outnumbered and surrounded, he was at a severe disadvantage.

“What the….?”, murmured the first, as a dagger appeared in his friend's back, as if by magic....

Unfortunately for the first of the bandits, he never got an answer to his question. For the assailant had garroted him neatly. As he crashed to the floor he saw a night elf  with daggers at the ready as his vision fades out.
